Red flags of a potential childhood abduction

On Behalf of | Mar 9, 2025 | Child Abduction

Childhood abduction is a serious issue, and it is possible for parents to kidnap their own children. This sometimes happens in cases where parents are going through a divorce, particularly if one parent is worried about losing custody rights.

To understand when this may happen, it is important to look for key red flags that indicate a high-risk situation. Here are a few examples.

Previous threats

First and foremost, if the other parent has made threats about abducting the child, take them very seriously. The fact that they would say something like this out loud suggests they have likely thought about it before and may even have begun constructing a plan.

Connections to other countries

It is also a red flag if that parent has significant ties to another country, such as close family members who still live there. For instance, if they originally came to the United States on a work visa, it may be relatively simple for them to abduct the child and take them back to their home country. In such cases, recovering the child can be very difficult for the U.S.-based parent.

That parent has flexibility

Consider the logistics of leaving the United States with a child. It is a potential red flag if one parent has a job that allows them to work remotely from anywhere, such as using a computer to work online. The risk may also increase if they own property, such as a home or even vacant land, in another country.

Financial changes

Finally, watch for any major financial changes. If one parent suddenly sells all of their assets and accumulates a significant amount of cash assets, it could indicate that they are planning to leave the country.

Parental abduction is illegal but does happen, so parents need to be well aware of their legal rights at this time.
