Steps to take as a victim of domestic violence

1. Prioritize your safety

The first step is ensuring that you and any children are safe. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services right away. Whenever possible, have a safety plan that includes a trusted place you can go, a packed bag with essential documents and medications and a list of emergency contacts.

2. Seek protective measures

Texas state law provides for protective or restraining orders for victims of domestic violence. The orders can prevent the abuser from contacting you, coming near your home or approaching your workplace. 

3. Document the abuse

Keeping detailed records can be critical. Ensure you write down the date, the time and descriptions of abusive incidents. If possible, gather photographs of injuries or damaged property and ensure you keep medical records, police reports and witness statements.

4. Access community resources

A majority of shelters offer emergency housing, support and counselling services for victims. Reaching out to these programs and asking for help provides not just immediate relief but also long-term guidance in rebuilding independence. 

5. Consider financial and emotional support

Abusers often use financial control to maintain power and therefore, exploring resources for financial assistance, employment support or housing aid can reduce dependency.
